“SAM” I am…

System for Award Management (SAM).

Have you seen the latest and greatest attempt by the government to streamline processes?  This is true innovation on the government side of the coin!  I have been a part of the conversations that are taking place at conferences and online surrounding the GSA SAM system and it really appears to be the next gen when it comes to managing your credentials as a vendor to the government.

For Vendors, Grantees, etc (referred to as “Entities”) the system is supposed to finally provide for one login to access al the tools needed to register, record reps and certs, and view and respond to opportunities.  Can you imagine getting rid of CCR, ORCA, and FBO in one fell swoop?!  So what?  How will SAM benefit a contractor?

“The overarching benefits of SAM include streamlined and integrated processes, elimination of data redundancies, and reduced costs while providing improved capability. There are specific benefits for various users… For vendors and others who register in CCR…one user ID and password will provide access to all the capabilities associated with: Registering to do business with the government, representing/self-certifying as a small business, [and] viewing business opportunities.”

There is still a little bit of a wait (the Entity Management capability is supposed to launch in the first HALF of 2012), but I think it may actually be worth it this time.  I will continue to watch this and report back to you – my faithful readers.  For now, I am sufficiently pumped up to see some actual innovation in the government processes.  I only skimmed the surface of what this is supposed to do for contractors and didn’t even mention it is supposed to help Contracting Officers and System Admins too!
